There is a lot of ugliness in this world. Sometimes I cannot believe how bad it is.

Today I received a phone call in the early morning, and that person told me that her dog had just been brutally murdered a few hours ago by her partner. And that this person also had beaten her up, threatened her with a gun, and would have killed her if she had not escaped. He chose the dog instead. I don't want to say who it is at this point, and please don't comment on my facebook because she doesn't want anyone to know right now.

If you or someone you know or an animal has been a victim of abuse, please get help or encourage them to get it. Please tell the victim that it is not his or her fault. It is important to remember that anyone capable of hurting or killing animals is also capable of inflicting grave harm on a person, and that victims not only suffer from physical, but also emotional and mental abuse, and that it is very hard for them to reach out for help. Please be gentle and patient with victims, and please do not blame them. They already feel bad enough.

Also, please consider looking up your state's laws on animal cruelty and if you feel like the law is inadequate, e.g. the crime for harming or killing an animal is merely a misdemeanor, contact your legislature.

It is important that we advocate on behalf of animal and human victims of cruelty. The two are often linked.
